Scared Attachments!

What is your attachment style?

Hypothetically, the experiences we encounter during adolescence profoundly influence our relationships with the environment, interpersonal interactions, and how others perceive us. As children, we absorb an abundance of information without fully comprehending its long-term impact on our future. During adolescence, learning processes, academic performance, and self-confidence are often overlooked in relation to attachment styles. It was only when my ex-partner discovered a video on TikTok that I gained insight into my attachment style. However, I did not receive this video in a manner that was conducive to learning. Instead, I felt attacked and targeted for my emotions and insecurities. I perceived my partner as rejecting me, unaware that this revelation would serve as a catalyst for personal growth. This video ultimately led me to seek therapy, which I now consider the most beneficial decision of my life.
I believe that attachment styles can evolve from adolescence to adulthood due to the dynamic nature of life and the constant process of learning, change, and personal development. My transformation has been remarkable, although I still grapple with certain challenges. Despite these struggles, my heart remains pure. During my teenage years, I would categorize my attachment style as avoidant-attached. I exhibited disengagement from others, avoided asking questions, and struggled to process feedback. While some of these traits, such as disengagement, persist, I would now describe my attachment style as anxious-attached in adulthood. It appears that I possess a combination of both styles, prioritizing independence and self-reliance while simultaneously acknowledging the desire for emotional support and a sense of dependability.
Recognizing that our happiness and fulfillment are our own destiny, it is natural to seek companionship and emotional support. As Pastor Johnathon Everette aptly stated, “everybody needs somebody.” This sentiment resonates with my avoidant attachment, highlighting the human need for connection and support. Life has significantly shaped me into the individual I am today. I can attest to the fact that I have endured numerous challenges, but it is important to recognize that there are individuals who have faced even greater hardships. Life is an ongoing process of growth, learning, and evolution. As I have navigated various relationships, including romantic partnerships, friendships, and parenthood, I have come to the realization that I may have a heightened sensitivity in my nervous system. I am content with this aspect of myself. Individuals who experience emotions on a level that others perceive as mild I find myself experiencing them on a significantly higher intensity. In my relationships, I seek reassurances of love and value. I harbor a profound fear of abandonment, which leads me to set no boundaries for myself or others and to react impulsively when triggered. Based on the description provided, it appears that my attachment style aligns with the anxious attachment category. However, it is crucial to consider other aspects of my personality, such as my empathy for others, my ability to identify with my emotions, my communication skills, and my comfort level with intimacy. These qualities collectively suggest a secure attachment style. It is essential to recognize that individuals cannot be solely categorized based on attachment styles. Life experiences and lessons have the transformative power to shape and mold us into remarkable individuals. Regardless of our attachment style, we can thrive and flourish in our own unique journey.
